Teach the learner-AI pair: redesigning clinical reasoning education for generative AI
- Scholarly Perspective: GAI is an "out-in-the-world" reasoning tool, so the unit of learning shifts from the individual learner to the learner-AI pair, with room for upskilling but also never-skilling, mis-skilling, and deskilling.
- Vignettes across training stages lead to 5 redesign strategies: introduce GAI early, keep reasoning-first workflows, grant graduated autonomy for GAI use in care, train faculty to supervise GAI-assisted reasoning, and rethink assessment.
Try this: treat AI use like any other entrustment decision on your team: talk about when learners use it on their own and when they reason first and check after.
